GEREFTAR گرفتار - CREATIVE DIRECTED/STYLED BY ME

I feel like many of us that come from a minority are usually put in this box; we are seen and expected to act in a certain way. People look at us and think that we are only good for the stereotypes that they put us under. We feel trapped. Especially when we are wearing our traditional clothing that has deep meaning behind it. It’s seen and made fun of.

I’m aware ofc that the hijab and niqab are worn as a way to cover yourself (ik there’s way more too it) but for this I went in the direction of Afghan culture and used the beautiful garment.. the burqa (the red veil) because yes it is similar to the other two, but because of some restrictions and rules women are forced to wear it rather than having a choice. Yea there are women who want to but the others who don’t.. can’t. They have to and ridding someone’s will to make a choice away is form of oppression.
Beside that part tho, the burqa is an amazing piece that has so much deep history behind it.

So using this garment combining with the fact we are trapped, an image was created to portray that we won’t be caged in to these rules and stereotypes. Hence why you see the woman applying makeup. She feels beautiful and just cause she has to cover her face, doesn’t mean she can’t do what she loves. Same goes for the man playing the saxophone. He chooses to express himself, his emotions, his love, his anger through his music.

read the images as you will, but we will not be caged in or portrayed as a certain thing. We will love as we will. We will be what we want.

“GEREFTAR” or chained, prisoned, trapped
